Visit Les Jardins Tranquille

Les Jardins Tranquille are lovely gardens in the north of the Dordogne department near to Brantome. Formerly called the Jardins d'au Delà the gardens have changed hands but remain well worth a visit.

Explore the Jardins Tranquille

On the banks of the Dromme river on the edge of the beautiful town of Brantome this lovely garden offers just what it says it does - tranquility!

The garden covers 12 acres in all and wandering round there are large English-style borders, shady wooded areas and a lovely 700 meter stretch along the edge of the River Dromme.

Planting has been planned to provide interest throughout the seasons and during our summer visit rudbekias, sedums and phloxes were providing summer colour whilst hostas, euphorbias and a wide range of trees and shrubs provided a verdant backdrop.

In one part of the garden a gazebo is adding colour with a beautiful orange campsis growing over it.

A formal pond and a natural pond add to the interest in the garden as does a topiary chess game. As you explore the gardens you will see the peacocks, ducks, geese and pheasants strolling around the grounds and there are also some goats and sheep.

Themed areas in the garden include an Italian garden, a Japanese garden and a riverside woodland area.

For a quiet break from the bustle of Brantome it is well worth a visit to these lovely gardens. There are many chairs and benches scattered throughout the property allowing an opportunity to rest and relax.

Places to visit nearby

As well as the Jardins Tranquille there is also a charming Botanic Garden in Brantome - le Jardin Botanique d'Alije which is open weekdays during July and August. This garden was developed to help unemployed people to find work. There are plenty of interesting things to see including their insect hotel.

As well as gardens the town of Brantome is magnificent and a lovely place to spend a day or two. Its beautiful setting in a bend of the river Dronne and with a Benedictine abbey right on the water's edge makes Brantome one of the highlights of the Dordogne area.

Also in the neighbourhood is the beautiful village of Saint-Jean-de-Cole, classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France, and the small town of Bourdeilles with its chateau - the Chateau de Bourdeilles which is open to visits.
