Property description

Our holiday home is a 150 year old former farmhouse with stunning views that has been restored to provide modern facilities (including new wiring and bathrooms) whilst retaining its original character.

The house has spacious rooms, including 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (2 of them ensuites) and gardens of nearly an acre with views of the village and surrounding countryside.

Set amidst farmers' fields, the house is within walking distance of a pretty village with cafes, restaurants and shops, and there are river beaches and a swimming lake nearby. Saint Severin is also within easy reach of the Bordeaux, Bergerac and Cognac vineyards as well as the chateaux, prehistoric caves and other attractions of the Dordogne valley.

Ground Floor

  • A large entrance hall leads to:
  • A French country kitchen, equipped with gas stove, fridge/freezer and microwave as well as a traditional buffet, and table that seats six people. Doors lead from the kitchen to the garden for dining outside. Off the kitchen:
  • The living room contains a sofa and easy chairs (comfortable seating for 6 adults), a television with access to UK domestic & international satellite TV channels and a multisystem DVD player. There is also:
  • A WC and utility room with a washing machine, iron & ironing board.

First Floor

  • The master double bedroom suite contains a king-sized bed, a walk-in closet and a large en-suite bathroom with a bath, separate shower, washbasin and separate toilet.
  • The second bedroom has a four poster bed, a sofa that can convert to a bed for a young child, and an en-suite bathroom with shower, washbasin and toilet.

Second Floor

Another set of stairs leads to the (full-height) converted attic where there are two other bedrooms and the third bathroom.

  • The third bathroom contains a shower, washbasin and toilet.
  • The third bedroom has a double bed.
  • The fourth bedroom has a double bed.

A cot and an extra fold-up single bed can be made available if requested.

The grounds

The gardens, with views of the village and surrounding countryside, extend nearly an acre on two sides of the property. They include flower beds and fruit trees (guests can help themselves to the cherries, plums, figs, hazlenuts & apples according to the season) and a large area laid to lawn. Garden furniture and a gas BBQ are provided for eating and lounging around outside. Attached to the back of the property is a barn, and the only neighbours are a lovely French family who own the barn and a house at the far side of the barn.

Location description

The house is situated in the countryside, just inside Charente close to the Dordogne border within walking distance (less than a kilometre) of the pretty village of Saint Severin, which has a range of shops, including a boulangerie, boucherie, epicerie, post office, tea rooms, cafe/bars serving food and an excellent restaurant.

LOCAL ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS:

DINING/GASTRONOMY
Excellent restaurant and cafés within walking distance of the house. Fine dining nearby in Aubeterre and at magnificent château restaurants in Petit Bersac and Chalais. Other good restaurants locally at Lusignac, Saint Paul Lizonne, Verteillac, Aubeterre, Salles Lavalatte, Saint-Romain and Riberac. Most local towns have weekly produce markets with the area's largest at Riberac every Friday morning. There are also seasonal markets selling regional specialities foie gras, goose, duck, walnuts, truffles and cepes. Riberac describes itself as the foie gras capital of the Perigord, and you can buy the delicacy direct from a producer in nearby Vanxains.

WINE & COGNAC
The Bordeaux, Bergerac and Cognac vineyards are within a 90 minute drive of the property. Many vineyards offer tastings and the opportunity to buy first rate wines at the cellar door. In the town of Cognac, Martell, Hennessy and Remy Martin offer tours of their cellars/estates. Also well worth visiting is the hilltop town of St Emilion.

CHATEAUX & CHURCHES
Numerous chateaux and Romanesque churches in the area are open for the public to visit. Particularly noteworthy are the nearby monolithic church of St Jean in Aubeterre, and further away the Chateau de Puyguilhem and Chateau de Hautefort. A visit to Brantome with its Benedictine Abbey makes a pleasant half day trip, stopping off at the Château de Bordeilles on the way.

CAVES & CLIFFS
Stalagmites and stalactites can be found in the Villars caves near Brantome (about 35 minutes from the house) and in the Vezere valley (about 90 minutes drive) the cave of Lascaux contains one of the most outstanding displays of prehistoric art ever found. The original cave is now closed to the public, but an exact copy can be found in an adjacent cave which is open to visitors. Nearby attractions include the mediaeval town of Sarlat, and the towns of Beynac and Rocamadour which are built into the cliff face overlooking the Dordogne.

SWIMMING
The river beach at Aubeterre is 10 minutes away by car and a further 10 minutes takes you to another river beach at Saint Aulaye. The swimming lake at la Jemaye in the Foret de la Double is a 20 minute drive. The beaches of the Atlantic coast are 90 minutes away.

WALKING/CYCLING
A great way to appreciate the beautiful local scenery. From the front door, you can follow local walking routes of 3km-25km mapped out by the commune that use ancient tracks and paths across fields and along river banks avoiding main roads, and well-marked VTT bike paths of various lengths. Walking & cycling route maps & 2 bikes are available at the house, with others for hire locally.

GOLF
9 hole golf courses at le Manoir du Longeveau in Pillac (10 minutes drive) and Domaine de la Lande at Servanches (20 minutes) or 18 holes at Golf de Perigueux & Golf de l'Hirondelle, Angouleme.

HORSE RIDING
Equestrian centres at Aubeterre, Verteillac & Bonnes.

CANOEING
Available locally on the River Dronne at Aubeterre, Riberac, Bordeilles and Brantome and further afield at various towns and villages along the Dordogne and Charente rivers.

TENNIS
Village tennis courts available for hire within walking distance of the house.
