Location description

'Terrieres' is a spacious and comfortable cottage for up to six set in an edge of village location with views over the surrounding fields and forests of the Dordogne.

THE HOUSE

The house is on one level with the hall, kitchen, lounge, bathroom and two bedrooms on the ground floor and only the master bedroom and ensuite shower room on the first floor. (The cottage is ideal if wheelchair access is required as inside the house all ground floor rooms are on the same level) All floors are tiled except for the master bedroom on the first floor and the house is bright and airy throughout. Exterior doors and windows are double glazed which helps keep the house cool during hot summer days and warm and draught free during the cooler months.

Downstairs…

The entrance hall leads to a kitchen/diner which is equipped with a self cleaning gas cooker with four burners and full sized oven, automatic washing machine, dishwasher, large refrigerator with freezer section, microwave oven, toaster and an electric kettle. The kitchen also has a dining table with six chairs and we imagine that most people would wish to eat at least one or two meals in this room each day. A set of three french windows in the kitchen opens onto a tiled front terrace at the front of the house which catches the afternoon and evening sun. Also leading from the entrance hall is a large lounge/dining room with two windows and double doors opening onto the front terrace and garden. This room has a sofa and armchairs along with a large table and six chairs for more formal dining. There is also English and French satellite TV with a dvd player, a selection of dvd's, books for your holiday reading and a large and efficient wood burning stove.

There are two good sized bedrooms on the ground floor each having twin divan beds and french doors opening onto the terraces and gardens at the front and rear of the house. Each has fitted wardrobes available for clothes and baggage storage. The tiled bathroom, also on the ground floor, is equipped with a bath and shower over, wash basin, WC and heated towel rail.

Upstairs...

A carpeted and safe staircase leads up to the large master bedroom which is a lovely room with lots of storage space and views over the surrounding countryside. It has a king size bed and an excellent large en suite shower room with a wash basin, WC and heated towel rail. A cot, bedding and baby booster seat are also available if requred.

THE GARDENS

A lytch gate entrance leads to the front walled garden which is planted with a large mulberry tree which offers shade from the afternoon sun. There is a tiled terrace all around the house with gates on to the road to prevent any toddlers from straying. Behind the house in the extensive rear garden there is a wisteria shaded terrace which is ideal for your holiday reading with a glass of wine or where meals can be eaten out of doors. Out of sight of any of the windows is a garage and workshop where you will find sets of garden furniture and a barbecue. The house is fully detached and has a large parking area which will accommodate at least five or six cars. Neighbours do not overlook the property as they are about 100 metres distant with the rest of the village and the Dordogne beyond.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN THE DORDOGNE

Cerveillac is about four kilometres south of Coulaures which is on the D705 between Savignac Les Eglises and Excideuil, and around 28 kilometres east of Perigueux.

THE LOCALITY

In Coulaures, just four kilometres from 'Terrieres' there  is a small self-service grocery and bakery store and a bar/tabac. The River Isle is also here where both fly fishing and coarse fishing are available, but a permit is required. Five kilometres in the opposite direction from the house is the village of Tourtoirac and he lovely River Auvezere. Here there are shops and a restaurant where you can have a meal or a drink or indeed a picnic on the banks of the river.

The local area abounds in restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets. The Dordogne specialities of duck, goose and foie gras together with the wines of Bergerac and Montbazillac feature prominently on nearly all local menus and there is one outstanding restaurant 'Auberge de la Truffe' 12 kilometres away for that special holiday occasion. Our everyday favourite with a more modest menu and prices (around 11 euros for the four course lunch) is only 12 kilometres away at Chervais Cubas.

The town of Excideuil is close by and here you will find all the shops you might need. There are two supermarkets - one with a filling station - bars, restaurants and a market every Thursday morning in the town square. Should you require a doctor or a dentist these can also be found here. Excideuil also has tennis courts and a large open air swimming pool which is heated to 24C during the summer months.  At Corgnac-sur-L'Isle the whole family can enjoy a day out on the Velo-Rail or you go to Lac du Rouffiac 15km north of Excideuil where there are sunbathing beaches, lake swimming and a wide variety of watersports available. June 2010 saw the first 9 holes open at the new golf course at Chateau d'Essiendieras near to Excideuil.

THE AREA

The area is dominated by pre-history, beautiful architecture and gastronomy. Whether you wish to visit caves with their drawings dating back 20,000 years, picnic by the banks of the Auvezere or Dordogne river or visit the local markets with some of the best produce France, all can be done easily from 'Terrieres'!

The  departmental 'capital' town of Perigueux is less than 30 kilometres away and the pedestrianised medieval city with its superbly restored lanes and squares around the cathedral is a great place for a coffee or lunch. The town has extensive Roman remains which are well worth exploring along with the excellent markets in the medieval city on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you require some 'retail therapy' the large shopping complex at Trelissac as you approach Perigueux will be worth a visit too!

At Champcevinel near Perigueux Aquacap is a superb new water park with pools, slides, toboggans etc providing fun for all the family and a great day out at very reasonable cost.

There are many pre-historic sites and caves in the area, the most important of which are located in the Vezere valley - Lascaux at Montignac is the most famous followed by the caves at Les Eyzies - all are within easy reach. Picturesque Brantome, the 'Venice' of the Dordogne surrounded by the river Dronne with its troglodyte caves is less than 40 kilometres distant, whilst nearby is the village of St. Jean de Cole - surely one of the most beautiful in France. The pretty town of Sarlat with its warren of alleys, virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages, lined with warm ochre stone houses must be seen and the medieval village of Domme perched on its rocky peak is easily accessible across the River Dordogne. World famous Rocamadour built on the side of a cliff can be visited further away to the south. There are lots of gardens to visit including the magnificent Les Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac and those at the Chateau de Hautefort.

The great activity around all of these tourist sites makes 'Terrieres' all the nicer to come back to as the area surrounding the house has been overlooked by many of the less attractive developments of the last century.

If you have any queries or questions whatsoever regarding the house or the local area please do not hesitate to contact us - we will do our very best!
