Welcome to Centre des Arts Le Cariol, where our guests can encounter themselves and each other through art! 

The estate house, restored in a contemporary style with elements from the 12th century, contains two stylish double rooms, two deluxe double rooms, and a beautiful suite. All are equipped with private bathrooms of course. The rooms are offered as chambres d’hôtes, but the house with its luxurious and comfortable interior can also be rented as a whole for families, marriages, business meetings & incentives. 

In addition to the chambres, there is a stylish lounge with a fireplace, a dining room, a library with a unique collection of art books, and a recreation room with sauna in the basement. Of course you can cool off in our beautifully designed swimming pool and relax on one of the lounge benches. In the summer of 2009 we will provide our guests with table d’hôtes. On the terrace of the chartreuse you will enjoy the beautiful panorama and the most stunning sunsets, and all of that during a splendid dinner with a fabulous glass of wine. 

The Chartreuse is located on the premises of Dutch artist Marthijn de Groot. Painting, ceramics, music, food, wine and the art of living play an important part in his life. Master classes are offered in all of these disciplines. All spaces have been designed by Marthijn de Groot and his art is richly present in this exceptional location in the Dordogne.

Location description

Centre des Arts Le Cariol is situated in the heart of the Périgord. The Périgord is the old name for the Dordogne region.  The Périgord consists of 4 parts.

The northern part is Périgord Vert: that is where there is a beautiful national park located. In the centre, toward the west, lies the Périgord Blanc, named after the white chalk plateaux. This is an unusual archaeological area with many interesting sites to visit. In the south-east there is Périgord Noir, home to many black truffles, a local delicacy. And finally, in the south, there is the Périgord Pourpre, called after the extensive vineyards. 

Le Cariol lies in the Périgord Pourpre, in the vicinity of the Bergerac and Monbazillac wine regions. Various medieval fortified towns are situated in the surroundings, such as Monpazier, Issigeac and Beaumont-du-Périgord. The region is renowned for its gastronomy, in which duck, truffle, walnuts and foie gras are central ingredients.  

The district has a land climate, but is also influenced by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a mild climate where it can become nice and hot in the summer but occasionally very cold in the winter. The air belongs to the cleanest in Europe. In the evenings, if the weather is clear, the Milky Way and thousands of other stars are clearly visible.

The Périgord is also referred to as the Land of the 1001 Castles. In addition to the many castles, the region is also known for the many caves where remnants from prehistoric times have been discovered.
