Visit Le Clos des Sources

The garden of Le Clos de Source is near the village of Vitrac and about 5 minutes drive from Sarlat. It is a very natural garden with some lovely planting all in a beautiful setting.

Exploring the Clos des Sources gardens

The Clos des Sources is found in the hills above Vitrac in a lovely woodland setting with views out over the lovely Dordogne countryside.

Clos des Sources gardenThe garden is on 3 levels, two long and fairly narrow levels at the top with attractive planting as you follow the paths towards the owner's attractive house set above the garden. From here you get fabulous views over the larger flatter part of the garden below and across the valley at the countryside belong.

At the lower level is a long border planted with different species of grasses and also a large pond surrounded by bamboos and variegated Arundo Donax - a large cane which in its non-variegated form is very common in the south of France, and in its variegated variety is very attractive.

There is also an alley dedicated to foliage plants, an English style garden and a Mediterranean garden and a woodland section. All in all there are over 3000 plants to admire including some rare and unusual varieties.

Scattered around the garden are various chairs allowing you to sit down and contemplate the view and listen to the silence broken only by the sounds of birds or the occasional bee buzzing past!

Clos des Sources gardenThe garden has been planted to enjoy a continuity of interest. I like the garden best in spring when the abundance of flowers is beautiful but a recent autumn visit reveals the lovely autumn colours of the trees and of course is the perfect time to enjoy the grasses border.

Whilst it is true to say the garden is not perfectly manicured, and indeed parts are on the wild side it is a very natural and charming garden and acts as a good contrast to the very manicured French-style gardens seen around the chateaus of the Dordogne or in gardens such as Eyrignac.

When you have finished admiring the garden there is a small salon de thé where you can enjoy tea, fruit juice and a selection of home-made cakes. There is also a pepiniere where you can buy many of the plants which you will have noticed as you walk around the garden.

Visiting the Clos des Sources

Opening hours:

The gardens are open from the 1st May to the 18th October every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10.00 - 18.00. If you are travelling far I would ring (05 53 29 67 93) as when I arrived recently at 14.30 they appeared to be just opening up!

Entrance: 5 euros for adults and free to under 16s.

The garden is in the commune of  Vitrac but a few kilometers away from the village and port. Once you get to Vitrac follow the signs to Clos de Source.
